Promoting kiteboarding in Charleston SC

Steve Schafer, died couple of days ago from a fatal shark bit while kiteboarding by Stuart, Florida! He was attacked by several sharks (maybe Great White). Is this the first shark related death for kiteboarding?? Definitely hits close to home because a lot of local kiters were just kiting there this past weekend for the Jupiter Kite Invasion. RIP Steve Schafer...keepin his family and friends in my prayers.

Ya i always knew that Flordia was full of sharks i wonder what the comparison from Stuart and Charleston is on number of sharks bc i do see a ton by the sandbar at sullivans... I might just get a shark proof suit, the one with the rings all over it. jk

I think I'm going to just invest in a solid pair of kevlar board shorts....

Surfline had a pretty informative page on him today. They're pretty sure that they weren't white sharks but bull or tiger sharks. Here's how they described the marine life:

"To call this place "sharky" is an understatement. Stuart literally sits on the boundary between the tropics and temperate climate zones, so many species that normally live as far south as the Caribbean and as far north as Chesapeake Bay frequent this area. Plus, the Indian River Lagoon and St. Lucie river systems converge here to flow out the St. Lucie Inlet. With more than 800 described fish species, these are the most biologically diverse estuaries in North America. And, extensive reef tracts surround the inlet, which is essentially a rivermouth. The Gulf Stream current, which runs about 10 miles offshore frequently spins eddies into nearshore waters. Because of this mosaic of habitats, millions of pounds of Spanish mackerel and bluefish come ashore here in the winter. Blacktip, spinner, tiger, bull, dusky and even the odd migratory great white shark pass through and forage on the myriad bait."

They said that the lifeguard that went out to save him had been bitten there before as well...

I wouldn't say that this is very representative of our fish population, but I also wouldn't have expected a 15 foot whitey to wash up at the light-house after STARVING to death (I too heard the pathology report came up with nothing but an empty stomach!)

I was out yesterday and rode on top of the sandbar in 2 feet of water all day.....:) Last year that 15 foot juvenile great white washed up on Morris Island, scientists thought it starved to death.. seriously.... the funny thing is it had not been windy for like 3 weeks... .. good thing the wind didn't pick up a few days before it starved :).... I was at 28 about a week before it washed up and we thought we saw two dolphins down towards breach, then someone said something like...' I think that is one big shark not two dolphins'... it was pretty far away but it looked like a giant shark thrashing about at the surface...... might have been the one that later starved..

When did dan floyd get hit?? Ya im not goin to lie im a little freaked out now because if Great Whites are in Flordia then they are def in SC and Breach Inlet has a ton of sharks in it! Ive hurd two stories to it: He was kiting and jumping a little and when he landed one time (thinking he was a bait fish jumping) the shark chased him down and grabed him while he was riding and his friend saw it while watching it on the beach. The other story is that the wind died and he was drifting in and he got attacked.

something is out of balance in our eco system when PACKS of sharks start attacking.

This is the first I have ever heard of a kiteboarding-shark death. Now I KNOW I'm not paranoid when I'm body dragging offshore.

Food for thought: Was he body dragging or did they 'pull him down'...

Danny Floyd got hit by what he thinks was a bull shark in an inlet in Floriday (I think it was Danny), it got his board and foot I believe..
